SECTION A (STRUCTURED QUESTIONS)
1. (a) concept of Classroom Management (CM)
    (b) describe 3 qualities of an effective ESL classroom teacher.
    (c)  how a teacher can develop the following desired qualities in a learner:
           (i)   punctual
           (ii)  respectful
           (iii) willing to learn 

2. (a) How  teacher create a comfortable non-threatening and safe learning  environment in an
           ESL classroom?
     (b) To promote greater pupil-centeredness during classroom activities in a multi cultural  
classroom setting the pupils maybe organised to work in an heterogeneous or homogeneous
           group. Which type of grouping would you choose?
    (c)   3 benefits of having a mini library in the classroom.

3.  (a) There is a better communication it the teacher facilitate openness and expectance during the
communication. Discuss 3 ways a teacher can ensure good CM while communicating
with students in this context.
      (b) Attention seeking is a common misbehaviour in the primary ESL classroom. 
            communication skills a teacher can use to address this misbehaviour effectively.   
      (c) How being assertive constructively would help a teacher bring about a change in
students’ behaviour. (5 marks)

4.  (a)  How home and social groups variables contribute to inappropriate behaviour.
             (4 marks)
      (b)  Refusing to participate in class activities and failing  to complete homework assigned  are two
non-destructive behaviours. How a teacher can address these issues? (5 marks)

  (c)  Managing destructive behaviours calls for a special set of understanding and also a special
         repertoire of skills. Explain why you need this set of skills in managing destructive behaviour
         effectively.     

SECTION B (40 MARKS)
 
1. Select a CM approach which you think is suitable for a multi-cultural classroom.

2. “Teaching, like knowledge, cannot be shifted, pumped or transmitted like the content of a letter 
       into the heads of a student.... the teacher designs environment made up by situations that
       teachers and students co-construct (Eisher 2002 page 47)
      To what extend do you agree with Eisner’s statement that such situation need to be
      co- constructed in relation to the Malaysian classroom context. Provide examples.

3. To ensure a positive teaching and learning environment it is important for all teachers to develop,
    monitor, maintain and sustain productive students’ behaviour in the classroom.  Evaluate various
    strategies that can be used to achieve productive students’ behaviour in the ESL primary
    classroom. Support your answer with examples.

4. A carefully planned system of rules and procedures makes it easier for the teacher to
communicate his expectations to the students and also helps ensure that the procedures set up
will be workable and appropriate. Discuss how a teacher can develop, teach and reinforce these 
rules and procedures in a large Malaysian ESL primary classroom. Provide examples to support
your answer.
